Gorbachev sings for one
Former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev has recorded an album of romantic ballads, the St. Petersburg Times reports . But don't expect to see the album on store shelves or iTunes: It was released in a limited edition of one CD.
Gorbachev recorded the CD of traditional Russian love ballads to raise money for the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation , a children's cancer charity named for his late wife. According to Pravda , Gorbachev collaborated with Andrey Makarevich, singer for Russian rock band Time Machine, to record the seven tracks on "Songs for Raisa," all songs the late Raisa loved.
The single CD copy of "Songs for Raisa" was sold last week at a Raisa Gorbachev Foundation charity auction in London, where it fetched $165,000 from a British philanthropist who asked to remain anonymous. "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling and actress Vanessa Redgrave were among the celebrities who attended the auction. Gorbachev performed the song "Old Letters" at the auction, which "was greeted with delight and a storm of applause," according to a spokesman from the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation.
