First Beano annual given to charity

A copy of the first ever Beano annual is expected to raise thousands of pounds for a cancer charity and attract bids from around the world. The annual was donated to a shop in St Andrews.

The rare book, from 1939, was spotted at the bottom of a bag by a volunteer working at the Cancer Research UK shop. The much-sought after annual was found among a pile of donated items by volunteer Matthew Harris.

It will be sold in an online auction which opens next month which it is hoped could fetch more than £2,000. The annual includes favourite Beano characters such as Lord Snooty, however Dennis the Menace is missing, as he did not make his first appearance in the comic until 1951.
