Swimmers invited to take charity dip

The University of Bradford's sports centre will host one of the world's largest swimming fundraising events later this month.

Swimathon 2008 will take place at more than 500 venues throughout the country between Thursday, April 17, and Sunday, April 20. Volunteers who fancy putting their skills to the test can sign up to take part at the university's 25 metre pool.

Sue Edgley, head of sport and exercise at the University of Bradford, said: "Swimathon 2008 is a great way for people to keep their New Year's fitness resolutions on track while helping Marie Curie to make a difference to the lives of tens of thousands of terminally-ill cancer patients."

Now in its 22nd year, almost half a million swimmers have taken part in previous Swimathon events, notching up a distance equivalent to more than 24 times around the world and raising more than £30 million for charity.

Entrants can choose one of three distances: 1.5km (60 lengths) for those who swim occasionally, 2.5km (100 lengths) for intermediate swimmers and five kilometres or 200 lengths for keen swimmers looking for a challenge.
